11 STA students traveled to Washington D.C. to experience our government in action, first hand.

"Close Up informs, inspires, and empowers young people to exercise the rights and accept the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy." Close-Up Washington D.C.'s mission fuels the numerous experiences opened to students each year through this amazing program.

STA has had the privilege of partaking in this program for nearly 20 years. Students and teachers attend workshops, visit the local communities of D.C. to see Democracy in action, are able to meet with representatives, senators, and committee member, and witness our politicians in their everyday roles.

STA Close-Up Moderator, Mrs. Alexandra Sarich accompanied 11 students to our nation's capital over the MLK Holiday Weekend. As described by Junior, Ally Columbus, "we were able to meet so many new people and get to experience their political views on laws and issues in their state, as well as our own. We were able to see monuments and memorials such as the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, 9/11Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Korean Memorial, and MLK Memorial, which was really powerful. On one of the days we had free time to go to any Smithsonian Museum available to us. On this day I explored The Air and Space as and Natural History Smithsonian. My favorite part was capital day. We were allowed inside the congressional office building for the U.S. House of Representatives on Capitol Hill. Here we got a sneak peak of the Committee of Jurisdiction. We also got to tour the White House which was a once in a life time experience to be able to stand where the past 42 presidents of the U.S. lived for their term. Overall, the trip is not just for those interested in government and politics, but for anyone who wants to see Washington D.C 'Close Up'."

Next year's Close-Up Washington D.C. is scheduled to take place from January 20th-25th, 2019. Mark your calendars!
