Mu Alpha Theta

The Saint Thomas Aquinas Mu Alpha Theta belongs to the National Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, dedicated to inspiring interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, promoting the enjoyment of mathematics, and fostering peer interaction.  Competition members participate in practice and contest activities. Tutor members offer much needed tutoring services to STA students. All members participate in Catholic Math League contests during the school year.
 

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW APPLICANTS

  • Enrolled in an honors or AP Math course, Pre-Calculus or higher
  • maintain a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.5 or higher,
  • maintain a cumulative unweighted semester GPA of 4.0 or higher or a cumulative weighted semester GPA of 5.0 or higher in all high school level Mathematics courses,
  • current with their STA Volunteer Hour requirements,
  • no disciplinary or attendance issues, and
  • a one-time membership fee of $25 will be collected upon acceptance.

New applicants will be granted associate membership status.  Once successfully achieving the membership requirements for one year, an associate will earn active membership status.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIP:

  • Enrolled in an honors or AP Math course, Calculus or higher,
  • maintain a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.5 or higher,
  • earn a weighted semester grade of 5.0 or higher in all current Mathematics courses,
  • current with their STA Volunteer Hour requirements,
  • uphold all of the rules and regulations in the STA Parent/Student Handbook,
  • no disciplinary or attendance issues,
  • complete at least 6 Mu Alpha Theta hours per school year participating in any combination of tutoring, competitions, student activities, or community events, and participation in all 4 Catholic Math League contests each school year (November, December, February and March).

     

A member will be put on probation if the above requirements are not met for 1 semester and terminated if the above requirements are not met for 2 consecutive semesters.

Only Senior members in good standing who have taken all 4 Catholic Math League contests and achieved a total of at least 6 service hours in their senior year will participate in the induction ceremony (held in the Spring) and receive honor cords (for Graduation).
